## Independent gambling support

If gambling is hard to stop or is affecting you, independent help is available. You do not need to keep playing to ask for support.

## The short answer

A GB-licensed casino may charge a reasonable, clearly disclosed inactivity fee reflecting its costs. The Gambling Commission sets conditions: at least 12 months before treating an account as dormant, an attempt to return the money first and a reminder at least 30 days before charging. Inactivity alone does not justify confiscating a deposit balance. Check the actual terms, notice and deductions before accepting a charge.

## What should you check before accepting an inactivity charge?

The Gambling Commission’s player guidance says the fee must reflect reasonable costs and be clearly set out. The business should try to return your money first. If repayment is unsuccessful, its reminder should identify when the fee will start and arrive at least 30 days beforehand.

| Check | Evidence to ask for | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dormancy trigger | The applicable term and last qualifying activity date | Different policies can define inactivity differently; at least 12 months is the regulator’s minimum |
| Disclosed charge | The fee amount, frequency and terms applying to your account | A balance reduction needs an identifiable basis |
| Repayment attempt | When and how the operator tried to return your money | Dormancy should not be treated as permission simply to retain the balance |
| Advance notice | The notice, delivery date and stated first-charge date | Check the actual 30-day warning; do not automatically add another month to every policy |
| Deduction record | Opening balance, each charge and closing balance | Separate a periodic fee from a missing balance or closure |

These are checks on the charge, not a finding that any particular deduction is valid. The amount, applicable contract and facts of the account still matter. Valid periodic fees can gradually reduce a positive balance to zero.

## Is an inactivity fee the same as account closure or confiscation?

No. A fee is a deduction under a stated charging provision. Closing an account is ending access to the service. A balance being moved out of the usual display is another event. Ask where the funds are and how to request them; a changed screen is not by itself proof the money has been lawfully forfeited.

The regulator says dormancy must not itself extinguish rights to the deposit balance or reduce its protection. That is compatible with reasonable, properly disclosed fees already being deducted. The distinction matters when a statement says “account closed” but shows no itemised charges.

## How do the checked casino policies differ?

These are public-policy examples consulted on 2 November 2026, not recommendations or tests of an individual account.

| Service and checked source | Published trigger and treatment | Important limit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 888 help: account fee | 13 consecutive months unused; £3 monthly from a positive balance, after repayment attempt and notice | Deductions stop at zero; the help says linked payment methods are not charged after that |
| BetMGM UK help: dormant account | 365 days without activity; £5 monthly from an existing balance over £1; advance email described | The wording leaves the final small-balance deduction unclear; ask support rather than applying another casino’s calculation |
| MONOPOLY Casino: Dormant Accounts terms | Possible closure and remittance after 30 months without a transaction, excluding self-excluded accounts from that provision | This closure clause does not establish a monthly fee or a permanent no-fees promise |

Do not apply a foreign-market 888 clause, or another operator’s inactivity definition, to your account. The specific brand guides retain the fuller named-policy context; this page explains the general checks.

## Can a fee use up the whole remaining balance?

It can under the checked 888 policy, which caps the final deduction at the remaining positive balance. Assume the fee has validly begun, the balance is an invented £8 and no other transaction occurs.

| Fee month | Opening balance | Deduction | Closing balance |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | £8 | £3 | £5 |
| 2 | £5 | £3 | £2 |
| 3 | £2 | £2 | £0 |
| 4 | £0 | £0 | £0 |

This is a balance calculation under that named policy, not a universal casino fee formula. The last £2 is not another £3 debit to a bank card. Whether the fee should have begun requires the separate terms-and-notice checks above.

## How can you get the money back without continuing to gamble?

1. Contact the operator through an independently verified official route.
2. Ask for the current withdrawable balance and the steps for returning it.
3. If it is below the normal withdrawal minimum, ask about a full-balance return through support.
4. If you want to leave, request account closure after dealing with the balance and retain confirmation.

You do not need to place more bets merely to address an unused account. Check the relevant return route rather than making a new deposit to reach a minimum. The checked 888 help explicitly provides for asking to withdraw a full balance below the usual minimum; other accounts need their own instructions.

If you are self-excluded, contact the operator about withdrawable funds without reopening gambling access. GAMSTOP says operators are required to return withdrawable balances when an exclusion is active; promotional restrictions and unresolved transaction questions remain separate.

Our [account-closure guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/how-to-close-or-delete-a-casino-account/index.md) explains what to save before leaving. Self-exclusion has a different purpose and should not be reversed as a way to avoid a fee.

## What if the fee has already been deducted?

Ask the operator to review the deduction and explain the applicable term, inactivity dates, repayment attempt, notice and calculation. State the correction or return you seek. Keep the statement, relevant emails and complaint reference.

If unresolved, use the operator’s complaint process. The Gambling Commission’s guidance describes escalation to the appointed ADR provider after the internal process, including where eight weeks have passed. Check the provider’s scope and the final response for an actual case. The regulator does not decide individual gambling-transaction disputes or promise to recover your money.

A refund of fees is not automatic. An error in the notice or calculation is a reason to request a review; the outcome depends on the facts and applicable rules.

**Scope of this check**

This answer uses public GB regulator guidance and dated named-operator documents. It is not a determination of a particular fee’s legality or a tested refund, withdrawal or support case. The final BetMGM small-balance boundary was not established; MONOPOLY’s closure provision is not presented as a monthly-fee schedule.

### Do all UK casinos charge the same inactivity fee?

No. Check the exact service’s trigger, amount, notice and repayment provision. The examples here differ, and a clause about closing an old account does not establish a monthly fee.

### Must I gamble to prevent or resolve an inactivity fee?

Request return of the withdrawable balance and, if appropriate, closure through the operator. Do not place bets or try to bypass an exclusion merely to deal with an unused account.
