## The short answer

A wild is a slot symbol that can substitute for specified other symbols when the game evaluates a win. The paytable defines the eligible symbols, positions and exceptions. Some wilds also expand, remain for later spins or multiply an award. Seeing a wild does not, by itself, mean that a combination pays or that the whole spin makes a profit.

![An invented 20-line slot costs £1 per spin, or 5p per equal line. A–Wild–A substitutes to form a qualifying three-A win paying five times the line stake: 25p. With no other awards, the spin loses 75p overall.](https://howtocasino.uk/illustrations/wild-symbol-line-stake-example.png)

Original example with an invented paytable, not a screenshot or the rules of a named game. The five-times award uses the line stake, not the full £1 spin price.

## What does a wild actually replace?

Read a wild as an instruction in the rules. If it may replace an A symbol, an eligible A–Wild–A combination can be evaluated as three As. If the rules exclude a bonus symbol, the same wild cannot be used to manufacture that bonus trigger.

Virgin Games’ symbol explanation describes wild substitution and several variants. Its general description is a starting point, rather than the paytable for every slot. A game may restrict a wild to particular reels, exclude special symbols or give an all-wild combination a separate award.

| Question in the paytable | Why it changes the result |
| --- | --- |
| Which symbols can it replace? | Ordinary paying symbols and special feature symbols can have different treatment. |
| Where must the combination land? | The game’s active line, ways or cluster condition still has to be satisfied. |
| Does the wild pay on its own? | Substitution and a direct award are separate rules. |
| Which game state is active? | A feature can change a wild’s behaviour without changing its name. |

Our [payline explanation](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-a-payline-in-slots/index.md) covers position and direction. A wild does not turn every visible symbol elsewhere on the reels into part of the same line.

## How do sticky, expanding and multiplier wilds differ?

| Label | What the label describes | What still needs checking |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Expanding | A wild covers more positions, often a whole reel. | When expansion occurs and which wins are evaluated afterwards. |
| Sticky | A wild remains in position for a defined period. | Duration, eligible state and when it disappears. |
| Stacked | Several wild positions appear together. | Whether the stack also expands or persists; the word alone establishes neither. |
| Multiplier | An eligible award is increased by a stated factor. | The award it affects and the treatment of several multipliers. |

The labels can overlap. A wild can expand and then remain for a feature; another can be sticky and carry a multiplier. They describe different properties, so a comparison that treats them as four mutually exclusive game types misses useful information.

A retained symbol is also not a retained profit. It still needs a qualifying result under the current rules. Nor does its presence establish the probability of the next outcome.

## What do Starburst and The Dog House illustrate?

NetEnt’s Starburst description identifies an expanding wild that covers its reel, substitutes for paying symbols and triggers a respin. Pragmatic Play’s The Dog House description places multiplier wilds on reels two, three and four, with sticky wilds during Free Spins.

| Named description | Useful distinction |
| --- | --- |
| Starburst | Expansion and a respin belong to this described mechanic. They are not a definition of every wild. |
| The Dog House | Multiplier behaviour and retention during a feature can coexist. The feature state matters. |

These are supplier descriptions of named products, checked on 1 November 2026. They do not establish a particular casino’s current build, stake range or RTP. Our separate [Starburst guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/how-to-play-starburst/index.md) examines that game, including the different published RTP figures.

## How much does a wild pay in pounds?

Use an invented slot with 20 equally priced active lines and a £1 total paid-spin stake. Each line therefore costs 5p. Its invented paytable awards five times the line stake for an eligible three-A combination, and the wild may replace A.

| Step | Calculation | Result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Line stake | £1 ÷ 20 | £0.05 |
| Qualifying A–Wild–A line | 5 × £0.05 | £0.25 returned |
| Whole spin, with no other awards | £0.25 − £1 | £0.75 loss |

The wild completes a paying combination, but the returned 25p is smaller than the full spin price. Calling the result a winning line and calling the spin profitable answer different questions.

If this invented rule additionally doubles that line’s award, the return becomes 50p and the whole-spin loss becomes 50p. Do not multiply the £1 stake by five first: that uses the wrong unit. Do not assume that two multiplier wilds add or multiply together unless the paytable specifies how they combine.

For a different layout, A–Wild–K would not satisfy this invented three-A condition. The substitution permission cannot supply a missing third matching position. Other lines or awards would need their own evaluation.

The [credits and coins guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/slot-denominations-credits-and-coins/index.md) explains how an apparent “5” can represent a multiplier, credits or a cash amount. Establish the unit before doing the arithmetic.

## Is a wild the same as a scatter?

Substitution and triggering a scatter feature are different jobs. A game can assign more than one job to a symbol, but that needs an explicit rule. A wild label alone does not establish a scatter award, Free Spins or a bonus.

Our [scatter guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-a-scatter-in-slots/index.md) explains trigger counts, positions and named exceptions. Keep those conditions separate when reading a result with several special symbols.

> **Check the exception before counting**
>
> If the rules say the wild cannot replace a scatter, two scatters plus a wild are still only two scatters for that condition. This is a conditional example, not a universal trigger count.

## Do more wilds mean better RTP or a better slot?

Counting visible wilds cannot establish a game’s expected return. A comparison also needs its award sizes, complete outcome model and exact configuration. A slot can display frequent small awards while still returning less than the amount staked.

| Useful feature information | What it does not establish |
| --- | --- |
| Expansion or retention rules | A guaranteed qualifying combination on the next result. |
| A published multiplier | The chance of receiving it or its contribution to overall RTP. |
| Several wild variants | A lower house edge than another game. |
| A supplier demonstration | The settings used in another operator’s game. |

Use the [RTP](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-slot-rtp/index.md) and [volatility guides](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-slot-volatility/index.md) for those separate measurements. Neither a dramatic animation nor a run without wilds makes a later win due.

## What should you check if a wild combination did not pay?

1. Record the full game title, round reference, stake and current base-game or feature state.
2. Check the active positions and the direction or matching condition.
3. Read the wild’s substitution exceptions, direct payouts and multiplier rules.
4. Compare the complete returned amount with the total accepted stake; ask the operator about an unresolved settlement.

UKGC RTS 3 requires applicable rules and relevant information about winning chances before a customer commits to gamble. Our [game-rules guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/how-to-read-game-rules/index.md) gives a fuller checklist. A result screenshot can help explain a dispute, but a single screenshot may omit the settings that determine the award.

## Related questions

### Do wild symbols always pay?

No. A wild may need other symbols, an eligible position or a qualifying feature state. A symbol can also substitute without having its own direct payout.

### Are sticky wilds permanent?

No universal duration follows from the name. Read the stated number of spins, feature duration and removal rules. A retained wild does not guarantee a future win.

### Can a wild replace a scatter?

Only if the exact game permits it. Do not count a wild as a scatter simply because it can replace ordinary paying symbols.

### Does an expanding wild increase my stake?

Expansion describes the symbol’s coverage. Check the accepted wager and any optional feature price separately; the word does not establish an extra charge or a free feature.

### Can wilds predict when a bonus will land?

The presence or absence of wilds in earlier results does not provide a reliable schedule for a future bonus. Read the exact feature rules rather than treating a visual pattern as a prediction.
