## The short answer

A hole card is the dealer's concealed second starting card in blackjack games that deal one. The dealer's visible starting card is the upcard. Whether a blackjack check happens before player decisions is a separate rule. In a no-hole-card game, the dealer's second card is dealt later; the treatment of extra split or double stakes still needs its own settlement rule.

![One dealer layout shows a visible king and a concealed second card; another shows a visible king with the second card to be dealt later. Both direct the reader to check blackjack-check timing and stake settlement separately.](https://howtocasino.uk/illustrations/hole-card-models.png)

Symbolic dealing models, not a real round. An initial hole card, an early blackjack check and the treatment of extra stakes are separate rules; the drawing does not identify a current GB game's procedure.

## What is the difference between the upcard and the hole card?

The upcard is visible to players during their decisions. In a hole-card deal, the dealer also receives a second card face down. That concealed card is already part of the dealer's hand, even though it has not been publicly revealed.

This describes the dealer's procedure, not a hidden card in every customer's hand. It also does not mean every blackjack game deals a hole card. The initial dealing sequence must be read for the specific variant.

For an online game, distinguish a stated game rule from a visual animation. Our [blackjack-fairness guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/is-online-blackjack-rigged/index.md) explains why presentation, the outcome model and a particular round's evidence are separate questions.

## What does it mean when the dealer peeks for blackjack?

A peek or check determines whether the dealer's two starting cards form a natural blackjack before the next relevant part of play. It is not the same event as turning the concealed card face up for everyone. The equipment or software can supply the relevant check without revealing the card's full identity to players.

Read which upcards prompt a check and when it happens. The international GGPoker house rules cited here, for example, deal a face-down dealer card but specify an ace-up exception for an early blackjack check after the insurance stage. The presence of a hole card alone therefore does not establish a check on every upcard that could make blackjack.

A negative check rules out dealer natural blackjack at that stage under those rules. It does not mean the dealer has a weak hand, cannot later reach twenty-one or will lose. A positive check and the player's own natural or other wagers need their stated settlement rules.

## What is a European no-hole-card procedure?

In a no-hole-card dealing model, the dealer initially has only a visible card and receives the second card after player decisions. The familiar European label describes a procedure; it does not prove what every European or GB table does.

| Procedure | When the dealer's second card is dealt | What still needs checking |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial hole card with a relevant early check | At the initial deal | Which upcards are checked, the timing and how naturals settle. |
| Initial hole card without that early check | At the initial deal | When dealer blackjack is resolved and which stakes are exposed. |
| No initial hole card | After the player-action stage in the model described here | Dealer completion and the treatment of original and additional wagers. |

Interblock's regulator-hosted supplier description explicitly distinguishes initial face-down-card and delayed-second-card models. It separately makes the dealer's blackjack check a configuration choice. BCLC's Basic Blackjack rules provide another delayed-deal example with specified original-bet treatment.

These documents illustrate real rule distinctions, but their jurisdictions are Washington State and British Columbia. They are not GB regulations, a directory of GB games or proof that a particular casino currently offers either configuration.

## Why do doubles and splits make the settlement rule important?

If dealer blackjack is not resolved before player actions, a customer may already have committed extra money through a double or split. The crucial question is whether the applicable rule takes all those stakes or protects some additional wagers. The no-hole-card label alone does not answer it.

The BCLC Basic Blackjack document states original-bet treatment for dealer blackjack in its double and split clauses. This is evidence that delayed dealing and automatic loss of every extra stake are not equivalent concepts. It does not establish one universal definition for every rule labelled original bets only, OBO or original-bet protection.

A conventional [double down](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-does-double-down-mean-in-blackjack/index.md) and a [paid split](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-does-split-mean-in-blackjack/index.md) can add money to the round. Their guides explain the stake changes; here the issue is how those amounts are treated if the dealer subsequently has blackjack.

## What happens to an original £10 bet after a £10 double?

Consider a hypothetical player hand that is not a natural and has not busted. There is no insurance or side bet. Dealer blackjack is ultimately established. The following cases deliberately specify different timing and settlement assumptions; they are not offered as the terms of a named GB game.

| Stated model | Total cash committed | Cash returned | Net result |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Relevant early check finds dealer blackjack before any double | £10 original only | £0 | £10 loss |
| No relevant early check; £10 double added; rule forfeits all stakes | £20 | £0 | £20 loss |
| No relevant early check; £10 double added; rule takes only the £10 original and returns the unbusted added stake | £20 | £10 | £10 loss |

In the last case, £10 coming back is a partial return of money already staked. It is not £10 winnings or a push of the complete £20 round. In the first case, £20 was never committed, so it would be wrong to describe a £10 double stake as refunded.

With exactly one additional equal £10 split wager and both resulting hands unbusted, the same arithmetic can illustrate the two expressly assumed settlement models. Resplits, doubles after splits and allocation between several original hands need more detailed rules; do not carry the simple refund across automatically.

If a relevant early check instead finds no dealer blackjack, none of these dealer-blackjack losses follows merely from the check. The hand remains to be played and settled normally. Timing information is not a completed-hand result.

## Does original-bet protection refund busted hands and side bets?

Do not assume so. Read the treatment of already busted hands, added wagers, resplits and any independent side bets. Different rulebooks can define protected amounts and exceptions differently. The worked example above explicitly excludes busted hands and side bets for that reason.

A player's natural, a split-hand twenty-one and a twenty-one reached with extra cards can also be distinct categories. The [natural-blackjack payout guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-does-blackjack-pays-3-to-2-mean/index.md) explains why the number twenty-one does not establish identical settlement.

An [insurance](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-insurance-in-blackjack/index.md) wager is a separate question from whether the main stake is protected. Surrender, where offered, has its own availability and timing conditions. Our insurance and [surrender](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-surrender-in-blackjack/index.md) guides cover those actions without treating a hole-card label as permission to use them.

## Does knowing the procedure reveal the hidden card or a guaranteed strategy?

No. A published dealing procedure tells you when cards and checks occur. A check for natural blackjack does not disclose every concealed value. This guide explains normal game rules, not a method for obtaining information that players are not entitled to see.

The procedure can affect the assumptions behind a decision chart, particularly when extra stakes can be committed before dealer blackjack is resolved. But it is only one part of a rule set: deck model, payouts, dealer soft-seventeen policy, split conditions and other actions also matter.

We have not calculated a universal house edge or recommended a double or split on a particular hand. A rule label alone is insufficient for either. Read the actual variant before applying a chart intended for another game.

## What should you check in the actual GB game's rules?

1. Whether the dealer receives a concealed second card in the initial deal.
2. Which upcards cause an early blackjack check and when it occurs relative to insurance or player actions.
3. How dealer blackjack settles the original stake and every added double or split stake.
4. Whether already busted hands, resplits, natural blackjack or side bets have exceptions.
5. Which source and rule version describe the actual game you are using, rather than another market's product.

If the settlement is unclear, keep the round identifier, complete cards, original and added stakes, amount returned and relevant rule wording. Ask verified operator support to identify the clause. A balance change without the complete round record cannot establish which dealing or protection rule applied.

## Related questions

### What is the dealer's hole card?

In a game that deals one, it is the dealer's concealed second starting card. The visible starting card is the upcard. Other games delay the dealer's second card until after player decisions.

### Is a hole card the same as a dealer peek?

No. A hole card describes the concealed card; a peek or check describes a procedure for determining whether the dealer has natural blackjack. Its timing and triggering upcards are separate rules.

### Does no hole card mean all my double and split money loses to dealer blackjack?

The dealing label alone does not establish that. Read which original and added stakes are forfeited or returned, including any bust exceptions. Some documented delayed-deal rules protect specified additional amounts.

### What does original bets only mean?

It refers to a settlement that limits specified losses to the original wager, but the exact protected amounts and exceptions must come from that rulebook. Do not assume every OBO-labelled game refunds every added stake in every situation.

### If £10 is returned from £20 committed, is that a push?

Not for the complete £20 outlay. Under the hypothetical protected-double model here, £10 returned minus £20 staked is a £10 net loss. A returned stake is not profit.

### Does a negative dealer-blackjack check mean the dealer cannot win?

No. It rules out natural blackjack at the relevant check under that rule. The dealer can still complete another winning hand, and the player's own hand remains subject to the normal rules.
