## The short answer

In conventional blackjack, the dealer draws on totals of 16 or less and stands on hard 17 or more. Soft 17 depends on the table: S17 means stand, while H17 means hit. The dealer follows the published procedure rather than choosing a tactic against your total. This applies while the dealer hand needs to be resolved; natural blackjacks, already settled wagers and special variants can change when a round ends.

![A dealer hand of ace and six stops at soft seventeen under S17; under H17 it draws, and adding a king produces hard seventeen which then stops.](https://howtocasino.uk/illustrations/dealer-drawing-rule.png)

Conventional drawing example: A + 6 is soft 17. An S17 dealer stands; an H17 dealer draws. If that drawn card is K, the hand becomes hard 17 and stands. This is a procedure example, not a player strategy.

## What totals must the dealer hit or stand on?

| Dealer’s usable total | Conventional S17 table | Conventional H17 table |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 16 or less | Hit | Hit |
| Hard 17 | Stand | Stand |
| Soft 17 | Stand | Hit |
| 18–21 | Stand | Stand |
| Over 21 after counting aces correctly | Bust: settle the hand | Bust: settle the hand |

Hit means take another card; stand means take no more cards on that hand. Under the stated conventional rules, these are mandatory dealer actions. A dealer does not decide that 16 feels strong enough, or take a discretionary card on hard 18 because a player has 20.

The table describes the drawing stage, not every event that can terminate a round. A dealer natural, a resolved player natural, all main hands busting, or a special wager can require a different sequence. Read the named game’s procedure before treating a short video as a rules breach.

## Why is ace–six different from ten–seven?

An ace counts as 11 when that does not take the hand above 21; otherwise it counts as 1. A soft hand has an ace currently usable as 11. A hard hand has no such ace, even if it contains an ace counted as 1. The useful total must be recalculated after each card.

| Cards | Usable total | Dealer consequence in the conventional model |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A + 5 | Soft 16 | Draw under S17 and H17 |
| A + 6 | Soft 17 | Stand under S17; draw under H17 |
| 10 + 7 | Hard 17 | Stand under both |
| A + 6 + K | Hard 17 | Stand under both |
| A + 5 + K | Hard 16 | Draw under both |

For example, an H17 dealer starts with A + 6 and receives K. The ace now counts as 1, so the hand is 1 + 6 + 10 = 17. H17 does not mean “keep drawing whenever an ace appears”: this is hard 17, so the dealer stands. If the added card were 4 instead, the usable total would be 21 and the dealer would also stand.

Our [card-values guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/blackjack-card-values/index.md) covers multiple aces; the [soft 17 guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-a-soft-17/index.md) focuses on the rule label. Neither label tells a player what action to choose on their own hand.

## Do real published GB rules use both S17 and H17?

Yes. PokerStars UK’s published Classic Blackjack rules describe eight decks and a dealer who hits soft 17. Its Premium Blackjack rules describe four decks and a dealer who stands on all 17s. Both pages describe a no-hole-card procedure. These are specific named rule sets, not definitions that every product called Classic or Premium must follow.

BetMGM UK’s standard Live Blackjack help describes a hole-card deal and standing on soft 17. It also warns that the actual game’s Help or Paytable contains the applicable rules. The fact that one live help page uses S17 does not establish that every live blackjack table does.

These documents were consulted on 29 October 2026. We have not played or tested the tables, checked an account’s live access, or certified their implementation. Published rules are evidence of the described procedure; your round’s rule record is needed to investigate a specific departure.

## Does the dealer keep drawing until they beat the player?

No. Suppose your valid final total is 20 and the dealer has hard 17. Under either conventional drawing rule the dealer stands on 17, and your ordinary main hand wins. The dealer cannot take another card just because they are behind. If your total is 16 and the dealer also has hard 16, the dealer must still draw while that hand needs resolution.

This fixed procedure differs from player decisions. Players may have choices such as hit, stand, split or double, subject to the game’s limits. The dealer’s H17 rule is not a command that players must hit their own soft 17. For the player’s round sequence, start with the [blackjack rules guide](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/how-to-play-blackjack/index.md).

A player who has already busted ordinarily loses the main wager before the dealer comparison. A later dealer bust does not restore that wager. Also check special dealer-total rules in modified games: a familiar hand total does not guarantee conventional settlement.

## Does the exposed dealer card tell you whether they must draw?

The drawing rule applies to the dealer’s complete usable hand total, not just the exposed card. Seeing a 6 does not mean the dealer currently has a total of 6. In a hole-card game a second card may already be face down; in a no-hole-card game it may be dealt after player decisions.

A hole card and a blackjack check are separate procedural questions. BetMGM’s standard help, for example, describes an ace-up insurance and blackjack-check sequence but says the dealer does not check for blackjack when the upcard has value 10. Do not infer a universal peek policy from the existence of a face-down card.

Check when a dealer natural is identified and what happens to extra split or doubled stakes. Those are settlement rules, not part of whether hard 17 stands. Our [hole-card explanation](https://howtocasino.uk/guides/what-is-a-hole-card-in-blackjack/index.md) separates card timing from the information the player can actually see.

## Why might the dealer stop without completing the usual drawing sequence?

A completed main-hand result can remove the need for further cards, depending on the game. That is why the hit-or-stand table should not be read as a promise that every round will show a fully drawn dealer hand. Conversely, another unresolved player hand or a side bet that depends on the dealer result can still need settlement.

There is no single rule for all products when everyone has busted. To give a clearly labelled international counterexample, a Nevada-filed live blackjack rule set ends dealer drawing after all players bust, while a separately filed dealer-bust side bet requires completion even when main hands have already resolved. These examples demonstrate procedural variation; they are not GB availability claims.

For a disputed round, save the table name, game version, round ID, date, full card sequence, unresolved wagers and the relevant rules. Ask the operator which clause governed the stopped or continued dealer hand. A rule discrepancy needs investigation; it does not by itself establish a refund or deliberate manipulation.

### Can the dealer hit on hard 17?

Not under the conventional S17 or H17 rules explained here: both stand on hard 17. A product with special rules needs its own drawing and settlement table.

### Does the dealer have to hit on soft 16?

Under both conventional rules, yes, while the dealer hand requires resolution. A + 5 is soft 16; adding a ten-value card makes hard 16, which still requires another card.

### Does the dealer have to beat 21?

No. Conventional blackjack does not require the dealer to chase a player’s total, and a total above 21 is a bust. The drawing rule stops on the stated usable totals.

### Are H17 rules also instructions for the player?

No. H17 describes the dealer’s mandatory treatment of soft 17. It is not a player decision chart, and permitted player actions depend on the table.

### Do all UK blackjack games deal a hole card?

No. The published PokerStars Classic and Premium examples use no hole card; the standard BetMGM live help describes one. Check the exact table rather than assuming the market determines the procedure.

### Does every dealer draw after all players bust?

No universal answer applies. The main-hand and side-bet rules decide whether anything remains to be resolved. A stopped animation alone does not prove the dealer ignored their rule.
