What is the actual credit-card rule?
Licence condition 6.1.2 states that the relevant licensees must not accept payment for gambling by credit card, including payments made through a money service business. The Gambling Commission’s guidance identifies online casino, betting and bingo among the affected sectors.
For the online-casino question, the answer is not a comparison of which licensed operator is more willing to take credit. The checked rule is an operator obligation. It should not be rewritten as a claim that every attempted payment makes the individual customer guilty of a particular offence.
This guide concerns the GB licensed service. An international payment page, foreign licence or bank permission does not establish that a website can lawfully offer online casino gambling to people in Great Britain.
Why might a casino still display Visa or Mastercard?
| Term on a page or card | What it does and does not establish |
|---|---|
| Visa / Mastercard | A network brand; not proof that the product is credit or that all products are accepted |
| Debit card | A different payment product; acceptance still depends on the operator, issuer and account |
| Prepaid or gift card | A separate product with its own funding, ownership and incoming-payment limitations |
| Google Pay / Apple Pay | A checkout method; check the underlying eligible funding and payout policy |
The debit-card guide gives directly sourced GB examples. Those examples concern specified debit products; they do not turn a general card logo into permission for credit-card casino deposits.
If a public page says cards without distinguishing their types, read its GB terms or ask the operator. Do not take a logo, an old screenshot or a broad international “debit and credit” sentence as the complete funding rule.
Does paying through an e-wallet change the ban?
No. The Commission’s money-service-business guidance explains that operators must satisfy themselves that the service prevents credit-card-loaded funds being used for gambling. The restriction is intended to cover the funding route, not only a card-number field in the casino’s cashier.
It also applies when a money service business issues its own card instrument through which those funds could reach the operator. A prepaid-looking label or a wallet balance does not establish an exception by itself.
This is a boundary to respect, not a set of instructions for moving borrowed money between services. Our Google Pay and PayPal articles explain published legitimate payment support while keeping funding restrictions separate.
Is a bank block the same thing as the casino’s legal obligation?
They are different controls. The operator must comply with the applicable licence condition. A card issuer can also restrict the transactions it recognises as gambling, using information such as the merchant’s category.
HSBC’s FAQ says its credit-card gambling restriction can affect recognised gambling merchants internationally. It also says it cannot guarantee that every gambling transaction will be blocked. That is HSBC’s description of its controls, not a promise that every bank implements exactly the same system.
Monzo separately lists gambling among transactions not permitted on its credit card. Those issuer policies reinforce why a payment being technically attempted, authorised or declined does not by itself decide whether the operator has complied with the GB rule.
| Observation | Conclusion you cannot safely draw |
|---|---|
| The bank declined the card | That the casino is the only reason for the refusal |
| A payment was authorised | That this establishes regulatory permission or a guaranteed casino credit |
| A wallet accepted a stored card | That the card may fund every type of merchant transaction |
Does this mean every debit-card gambling payment must work?
No. A debit product is different from a credit card, but its use still depends on the service’s supported methods, the card issuer, available funds, account limits and other controls. The credit-card restriction does not require a bank or casino to approve a debit payment.
A separate gambling block on a debit account is also different from the credit-card ban. If a payment is stopped, ask about the entry or restriction rather than looking for a way around it. Authentication at checkout does not remove an account’s identity requirements.
The broader payment-method comparison helps separate direction, ownership, limits, costs and timing instead of treating one accepted label as an answer to every payment question.
Do lottery exceptions or old payment pages change the casino answer?
The regulator describes narrow exceptions concerning non-remote lottery purchases, including lottery tickets bought alongside other goods in a shop and certain postal payments. Those descriptions do not give an online casino an exception for credit-card deposits.
An older article can predate the April 2020 restriction, and an international brand may publish payment instructions for another jurisdiction. Read the current GB service and actual transaction type. Do not convert a limited lottery exception into a general gambling exception.
Similarly, a historical credit-card refund or settlement description is not permission to make a new credit-card gambling deposit. The direction and date of a transaction matter.
What should you do if the wording or a bank entry is unclear?
- Identify the exact website and legal operator; check the relevant GB permission independently of the payment logo.
- Confirm whether the particular card is debit, credit or another product and what the operator actually supports.
- For an unexplained transaction, compare the bank entry with the casino’s record, including amount, currency, time and reference.
- Ask the issuer or operator about the specific payment stage. Report an unrecognised transaction through the bank’s official channel.
- If the operator’s explanation remains unsatisfactory, preserve the written answer and use its formal complaints process.
Our debit-card article explains why a pending bank hold is not proof of a completed casino deposit. The licence-check article explains how to identify the correct service, without treating a financial brand logo as a licence.

Which licensed GB online casino accepts credit-card gambling deposits?
The relevant licence condition prohibits online casino licensees from accepting them. A list advertising credit-card acceptance is not evidence of a lawful exception for the GB casino service.
Can I use a credit card through PayPal or another money service business?
The restriction includes credit-card payments through money service businesses. Operators must ensure the service prevents credit-card-funded money being used for gambling; a different interface does not remove that requirement.
Does a Visa debit deposit mean Visa credit is allowed too?
No. Network brand and funding type are separate. Check the specific product; a supported debit card does not establish credit-card acceptance.
Does a successful credit-card authorisation prove a casino payment is permitted?
No. Issuer processing and the operator’s regulatory obligation are separate. HSBC also explains that its recognition controls cannot guarantee blocking every gambling transaction.
Is the credit-card rule identical to a personal debit-card gambling block?
No. The GB credit-card rule is an operator restriction. A separate debit-account gambling control has its own scope and bank policy; neither guarantees that every other payment is approved.
Does buying lottery tickets in a shop create an online casino exception?
No. The regulator’s limited non-remote lottery exceptions do not permit credit-card online casino deposits. Read the transaction and sector precisely.
