Which Bonanza does this explain?
This is Bonanza by Big Time Gaming, the six-reel mining game also listed as Bonanza Megaways by GB operators. Its horizontal carts add symbols above the four middle reels. Winning symbols are removed and replacements can form another win before a new spin begins.
Sweet Bonanza, Big Bass Bonanza and Bonanza More Gold are separate titles. Their multiplier symbols, collection features or added modifiers do not establish the rules of the original BTG game. The provider name in the game information is a useful check when several search results share “Bonanza”.
Megaways describes how combinations are counted on the changing reel layout. The free-spins multiplier is a separate calculation. Our explanation of Megaways slots covers the ways mechanic without assuming that every Megaways game shares this bonus.
How does GOLD start the free spins?
The published GB rules start the feature when four gold-bar Scatters spell GOLD. The initial award is 12 free spins. Additional Scatters on the qualifying result add five spins each; for example, one extra makes the initial award 17. This is a count of spins, not a 12× or 17× cash prize.
| Event | Published rule | What to keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Four GOLD Scatters in the base-game trigger | Start with 12 free spins. | The trigger count does not state how much those spins will return. |
| An additional Scatter on the trigger | Add five free spins. | An extra Scatter is not a five-times win multiplier. |
| Three free-spin Scatter carts during the feature | Award five extra free spins. | These are the feature’s cart Scatters, not a rule that one ordinary symbol adds spins. |
| Four free-spin Scatter carts during the feature | Award ten extra free spins. | Use the extra-spin award and the win multiplier as separate counters. |
Virgin’s detailed table specifies three or four cart Scatters for the five- or ten-spin retrigger. Its nearby general wording about “every” Scatter should not be read as a promise that one cart always adds spins. Betano’s GB description gives the same three/four retrigger amounts.
The game feature is also separate from a casino promotion awarding spins to an account. A promotion’s game, spin value, expiry or balance terms need their own check; they do not change the GOLD trigger inside the slot.
When does the win multiplier increase?
A reaction is the replacement of winning symbols: they disappear, new symbols arrive, and the game checks the resulting layout. In free spins the multiplier begins at 1× and increases by one after each winning reaction. The order matters: settle the win at its applicable factor, then carry the higher counter into the next evaluation.
A layout can contain several winning combinations. Their eligible awards are added for that evaluation; several simultaneous combinations do not mean that the same layout should be settled repeatedly at successively higher factors. The rise follows the reaction, rather than the number of symbols removed.
| Readout or event | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 1× before a qualifying win | That win uses the starting factor. |
| The winning symbols react and the counter rises to 2× | A subsequent qualifying win uses the higher factor. |
| Several winning combinations are present together | Add the eligible awards for that layout; do not invent a new reaction for each individual combination. |
| The replacement layout has no win | There is no new cash award to multiply. A visible counter alone does not pay. |
The cited GB pages describe a feature multiplier rising after reactions, but do not document every screen transition or build-specific display. Follow the multiplier and win history in the game actually open. The calculation below stays within one free-spin reaction sequence, so it does not rely on an undocumented reset assumption between separate free spins.
A worked example: £2.30, not the final counter times everything
Assume one free spin starts at 1× and produces three successive winning layouts. At the example’s selected stake, their aggregate cash awards before the feature multiplier are £0.40, £0.20 and £0.50. These amounts are invented teaching inputs, already converted from the hypothetical paytable into pounds; they are not observed Bonanza results.
| Winning layout | Cash award before feature multiplier | Factor for this win | Award after multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | £0.40 | 1× | £0.40 |
| Second, after the first reaction | £0.20 | 2× | £0.40 |
| Third, after the second reaction | £0.50 | 3× | £1.50 |
| Total for the three wins | £1.10 before the feature factors | Add the three awards | £2.30 |
The arithmetic is (£0.40 × 1) + (£0.20 × 2) + (£0.50 × 3) = £2.30. After the third winning reaction the counter can show 4× for the next evaluation. That does not turn the three earlier wins into £1.10 × 4 = £4.40. If the next layout has no win, its award remains £0.
Do not multiply by the stake a second time. If the example used a 20p triggering stake, the three pre-multiplier cash amounts already reflect that stake. Multiplying £2.30 by £0.20 again mixes two different calculation stages. Conversely, an amount already shown as a final multiplied cash win should not receive the feature factor again.
£2.30 is the illustrative credit for these three wins, not the net profit for a session or a forecast for a whole bonus. Any other feature wins, the triggering paid spin and earlier paid spins would need separate accounting.
Do extra spins increase the multiplier automatically?
An extra-spin award changes how many free spins remain. A winning reaction changes the multiplier. They are different events, so adding five spins does not by itself add five to the multiplier or multiply the balance by five.
For example, assume the current spin has already been deducted and the remaining-spin counter shows two. A qualifying three-cart award adds five, leaving seven. That arithmetic does not say what any of those seven spins will pay. Read any cash win on the same result separately from the extra-spin notification.
Sky’s published rule keeps the triggering stake for the duration of the free spins. An award of additional spins is not a new request to increase that stake. Do not interpret a larger spin counter as evidence that a higher cash stake has been applied.
Why more Megaways is not another cash multiplier
The supplier describes a maximum of 117,649 ways. A ways count measures possible symbol paths on the current layout. It is not a cash prize and should not be multiplied into an award that the game has already calculated.
For a simple invented layout, two matching positions on the first reel, three on the second and one on the third can make 2 × 3 × 1 = 6 matching three-reel paths, provided they meet that symbol’s win rule. Six paths is a combination count, not evidence of a 6× feature multiplier. Additional reels, symbol requirements and wilds would need their own paytable evaluation.
This also explains why copying a maximum-ways figure into the cash example is wrong. The ledger starts with aggregate cash awards for each winning layout. The applicable combinations and stake have already been accounted for before the separate free-spins factor is applied.
Does “unlimited multiplier” mean an unlimited payout?
The public GB descriptions call the multiplier unlimited. That describes the rising multiplier mechanism; it does not override a game or operator’s monetary payout limit. Nor does it guarantee that enough winning reactions will occur to reach a large factor.
A high counter can still be followed by a losing layout. Neither a GOLD near-miss nor a run without a bonus establishes when the next trigger will arrive. The rules cited here do not supply a trigger probability or a personal expected wait, so there is no sound spin target to calculate from them.
The supplier’s public RTP figure describes a theoretical game specification, not a promised return for a bonus or a short session. Check the exact build’s rules for its return figure and monetary limits. The slot RTP explanation shows why an advertised percentage cannot be used to predict the next few results.
What should you check if your result looks different?
- Confirm that the title is the original Bonanza by Big Time Gaming, rather than another Bonanza game or a sequel.
- Compare the GOLD trigger with the feature’s cart-Scatter retrigger table; they are different events.
- Read the multiplier before the relevant win, then the increase after the reaction. Do not apply the final counter retrospectively.
- Establish whether a displayed amount is a paytable multiple, pre-multiplier cash or a final cash award before doing any extra multiplication.
- For an unexplained result, keep the game name, time, stake and round identifier, plus the rules or win-history screen showing the amount. Ask the operator to reconcile that recorded round.
This guide was checked against the supplier identity page and public GB game descriptions on 5 November 2026. We did not log into an account or play a round. A public game page is evidence of what that page describes, not a promise of availability, the same controls or the same installed configuration on every account.
Related questions
Does GOLD give a 12× win in Bonanza?
No. Four GOLD Scatters start 12 free spins under the cited GB rules. The win multiplier starts at 1× and rises after winning reactions. A spin count and a cash multiplier measure different things.
Does the final multiplier apply to all earlier free-spin wins?
The calculation uses the factor applicable to each win. A counter reached after later reactions should not be applied retrospectively to earlier awards. Add the settled cash wins rather than multiplying their total by the last number.
Does one Scatter during free spins always add more spins?
Do not assume that from a short description. Virgin’s detailed table specifies three cart Scatters for five extra spins and four for ten; Betano’s GB description agrees. Check the extra-spin symbols and table in the exact game.
Do several wins on the same layout increase the multiplier several times?
The rule increases the factor after a reaction. Several simultaneous winning combinations are evaluated together for that layout; do not invent a separate reaction and higher factor for each combination.
Does Bonanza Megaways use the same multipliers as Sweet Bonanza?
No. This is the original Big Time Gaming game. Sweet Bonanza is a separate title with different multiplier symbols and calculation rules. A shared word in the title is not evidence of a shared feature.
