What makes a scatter different from an ordinary symbol?
An ordinary line-paying symbol generally needs to form a qualifying combination along an active line. A scatter is evaluated under a separate rule. Its count can matter without the symbols following that line, but the game can still restrict which reels or positions qualify.
Do not translate ‘scatter’ into ‘any number anywhere wins’. You need the minimum count, eligible locations and the award attached to that count. Not every slot has a scatter, and some symbols have more than one role.
Our payline guide explains how an active path is evaluated. A game using ways, clusters or another mechanic still needs its own explanation of how special symbols are counted.
Does a scatter pay cash, trigger free spins or do both?
| Separate question | What you need from the rules |
|---|---|
| Does this count pay a scatter prize? | The cash/credit award table and whether the multiplier uses total stake or another unit. |
| Does this count start a feature? | The required count and positions, the current game state and what feature is awarded. |
| Can the symbol also act as a wild? | The substitution rule, eligible symbols and exclusions. |
These are separate properties. A feature trigger does not, by itself, establish an independent cash payout. A scatter cash award does not tell you how many feature spins follow. A symbol's ability to substitute in a line combination is another rule again.
Why do the required counts differ between games?
| Documented example | What the source describes | Limit of the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Book of Dead — rules GRS0595-3, 14 September 2022 | Three or more scatters award ten free spins; the symbol also acts as a wild. A separate scatter cash table is provided. | Dated Play'n GO-authored rules copy on a third-party CDN, not a check of a current GB deployment. |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 — supplier product description | Four or more scatters in the base game trigger fifteen free games; three or more during the feature add five. | Global product overview. It does not establish a separate scatter cash rate or every GB configuration. |
The contrast shows why both title and game state matter. A three-symbol threshold in one game's feature cannot be used as the base-game rule for another title. These examples explain the terminology; they are not a recommendation of sites carrying the games.
International supplier pages can also describe features absent from a GB version. In particular, a description of a bonus buy does not establish GB availability. Our bonus-buy guide explains the Commission's documented action on that separate functionality.
How do you calculate a scatter payout?
First identify the unit. Page four of the dated Book of Dead document labels its separate scatter table as multiples of total bet: three, four and five scatters pay 2×, 20× and 200× respectively. Its ordinary symbol table uses a per-line basis. Those headings must not be mixed.
As a calculation illustration using that documented rule, assume a £1 total stake and three qualifying scatters. The scatter cash award is 2 × £1 = £2. Do not multiply it by the number of paylines, use the smaller line stake or add the paid stake again unless a different rule expressly requires it.
| Calculation item | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Total paid spin stake | £1 |
| Documented multiplier for three scatters | 2× total bet |
| Scatter cash award | £2 |
| Feature returns or other awards | Not assumed; must be accounted for separately |
The £2 is the scatter award, not a statement of the completed round's total return or profit. If the only return on a £1 paid spin were £2, its net result would be £1 profit. Here a feature may also have been triggered, so the final round accounting must include its actual settled returns as well.
What is the difference between a scatter and a wild?
A wild's substitution rule can help form another qualifying symbol combination. A scatter's separate rule evaluates its eligible occurrences. Those descriptions are useful, but they do not mean the two roles can never belong to one symbol: Play'n GO describes Book of Dead's book as both.
Equally, do not assume an ordinary wild replaces a scatter or helps reach a feature count. Substitution exclusions are game-specific. Read what the exact symbol can replace and which rules it activates rather than applying a blanket ‘wilds always’ or ‘wilds never’ rule.
Do scatters mean another bonus is due?
No. Nearly reaching a trigger is not a debt the game must repay. For random online slots, a recent sequence of misses does not create an entitlement to a scatter on the next paid spin. Great Britain's standards prohibit adaptive, compensated behaviour in random games.
Distinguish that from an explicit feature state: if a game awards additional spins after a stated count during a feature, that is a rule for that state. It does not establish that the next scatter is more likely because you have already spent money.
Nor does knowing a trigger count reveal its frequency. You cannot calculate the probability from visible symbol positions alone without the game's relevant mathematical information. RTP and volatility describe different aspects and cannot predict the next qualifying result.
What should you check if a scatter result is confusing?
- Identify the exact title, operator and version where shown, and whether the result occurred in the base game or a feature.
- Find the scatter entry in the actual help/paytable: eligible reels or positions, required count and separate cash and feature awards.
- Check whether the cash value uses total stake, line stake, credits or another specified unit.
- Read wild substitution and retrigger rules separately.
- For a disputed result, keep the game/round identifier and time and ask verified operator support to explain the settlement against those rules.
A matching symbol count in an unrelated review is not enough to prove a mispayment. Our guide to reading game rules and paytables explains how to compare the actual units and version before drawing a conclusion.
Is a scatter symbol the same as the Scatter Slots app?
No. Scatter Slots is also the name of a social casino product. Its publisher Murka says winnings stay within the game. That named app is a different subject from a scatter symbol in a real-money casino game's rulebook.
Do not infer cash-withdrawal rights or a GB casino licence from the shared word. This guide explains symbols; it does not assess app purchases or recommend a social product.
Related questions
What does a scatter symbol do?
It is evaluated under a separate counting and position rule. A qualifying result can award cash, enter a feature or do both. Check each role rather than inferring one from the symbol's name.
Do three scatters always trigger free spins?
No. The required count and game state vary. Pragmatic Play's Gates of Olympus 1000 overview describes four or more in its base game and a different retrigger rule during the feature. Check the actual version's help.
Do scatters need to land on a payline?
A scatter is evaluated separately from ordinary line combinations, but eligible reels and positions can still be restricted. ‘No ordinary payline required’ does not mean every occurrence anywhere automatically counts.
Does every scatter pay money?
The term alone does not establish a cash payout. Read a separate scatter award table if there is one, alongside any feature trigger. A product page describing only a trigger does not prove that no separate award exists.
Can a scatter also be a wild?
Yes, a game can combine those roles. Book of Dead is a documented example. Whether other wilds substitute for a scatter is a separate, game-specific question.
Is a £2 scatter award on a £1 spin the same as £2 profit?
No. Award and profit are different. If £2 were the complete return, the net would be £2 minus the £1 stake: £1 profit. Where a feature or another award is also involved, account for its settled returns separately.
