What does the name tell you about the game?
Both games belong to baccarat, but the role of the bank changes the financial relationship between participants. A person betting on Banker at Punto Banco does not become the banker, handle the bank or accept other customers’ opposing stakes.
For a concrete comparison, this guide uses the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s published Chemin de fer rules and Metropolitan Casinos’ GB Punto Banco rules, version 2.4, July 2026. Sanremo’s own Chemin description independently explains the rotating player bank and the Player decision on five. These are identified examples, not a single rulebook assembled from every jurisdiction.
The article explains the differences and worked comparisons. It is not a complete universal Chemin drawing chart, and we have not verified a current GB online Chemin offering. A generic online Baccarat category usually needs a closer title and rules check before it establishes this format.
What changes between Chemin de fer and Punto Banco?
| Question | Chemin model consulted here | Metropolitan Punto Banco model |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies the bank? | A participating player acts as banker. | The casino banks the game. |
| What limits opposing action? | Opposing wagers must be accepted against the offered bank. | The table’s house-banked betting limits apply. |
| Who receives the Player cards? | A representative punter handles the opposing hand under the procedure. | Player is a dealt hand label; betting on it creates no optional draw decision. |
| Does Player draw on an initial five? | The representative Player may choose Card or Stay if neither initial hand is a natural. | Player draws, unless a natural has already stopped further dealing. |
| What happens after a banker loses? | The bank passes under the published Chemin procedure. | The house remains the bank; an ordinary customer’s losing wager does not transfer it. |
| Is every commission identical? | The cited MGC rules permit 4% or 5% on banker winnings. | A winning ordinary Banker wager pays 19:20. |
At a physical table, Mini generally describes a compact, dealer-led format; online it can also be a particular software title. Neither name by itself establishes player-banked Chemin. Our Mini Baccarat guide explains those distinctions.
Are the hand values different?
The consulted games use baccarat point values: an ace is one, cards two to nine have their face value, and tens and picture cards are zero. Only the final decimal digit of a hand total counts. Nine is the highest point total, and an initial eight or nine is a natural that stops further drawing under the cited procedures.
For example, a 7 and a 6 total thirteen and score three. A queen and a 9 score nine. These are baccarat points, not blackjack totals and not poker hand rankings.
That shared scoring does not make the procedures interchangeable. The important differences arise before and after the score is compared: who funds the bank, which wagers are accepted, who can make a draw decision and how the result is settled.
Use the main baccarat guide for the underlying hand labels and scoring. For the fixed Punto procedure, the third-card guide supplies the chart rather than asking you to memorise it from a Chemin comparison.
How does a player bank change the amount at risk?
In the cited MGC model, the banker offers an amount, opposing wagers are accepted against it and an unmatched balance is withdrawn before dealing. The announced bank and the accepted action are therefore different amounts.
| Fictional bank step | Amount | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Banker offers a bank | £100 | Maximum amount initially offered for the round. |
| Two opposing wagers are accepted | £20 + £50 = £70 | The accepted opposing stakes total £70. |
| Unmatched amount is withdrawn before the deal | £100 − £70 = £30 | This £30 is outside the accepted action in this example. |
| Banker loses the accepted main action | £70 | The two accepted opposing wagers receive even-money profit from the bank. |
The banker’s loss on the accepted main action is £70, not £100 and not £140. The opponents also recover their own original £70 in stakes; that return should not be counted as another £70 of banker profit or loss.
This example concerns one agreed bank with no side bets and no other charges. It does not establish a minimum bank, maximum bank or staking menu at any British venue. A house-banked Punto wager needs its own table-limit and payout checks instead.
What is the decision on five?
In the cited Chemin rules, the Player representative can request a third card or stand when the initial Player total is five. A representative acts for the opposing Player hand; this does not mean every person with an accepted stake receives an individual private hand or a separate draw decision.
In Metropolitan’s Punto Banco model, Player draws on zero to five and stands on six or seven, subject to the natural override. A customer cannot change that procedure because a result history looks favourable.
A Player hand of 2 and 3 starts on five. If an 8 is drawn, the new arithmetic total is thirteen and the baccarat score becomes three. Drawing did not add eight to a score that can exceed nine; it changed the final digit. Standing would have kept the score at five, but the result still depends on the opposing hand and the applicable subsequent procedure.
How are banker wins, commission and ties settled?
The MGC Chemin rules allow a 4% or 5% charge on the banker’s winnings. Using the fictional £70 of accepted opposing stakes above, a banker win gives £70 gross profit before that charge. The fee is calculated from the amount won, not from the full £100 initially offered and not from stake plus profit.
| Illustrative fee on £70 banker winnings | Fee | Net banker profit |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | £70 × 0.05 = £3.50 | £66.50 |
| 4% | £70 × 0.04 = £2.80 | £67.20 |
These exact amounts avoid fractional-chip rounding issues; an actual table’s rounding provisions still matter. They are net profit calculations, not the total cash remaining in the bank. If the banker loses, the accepted opposing main wagers win at even money under this model.
A tied main result voids the wagers in the cited MGC rules. Do not assume every Chemin tie forces money into another round. Metropolitan Punto Banco separately returns ordinary Player and Banker stakes on a tie; an optional Tie wager is a different settlement.
Our baccarat commission guide explains why a 5% charge on a winning amount differs from a charge on all money on the layout. The odds-and-payouts guide also separates a main-hand tie from winning a Tie bet.
Does the player keep banking after a round?
Under the consulted MGC procedure, banking must pass after a loss. A banker can also voluntarily pass at the permitted point after a round. The rules governing the next banker and offered bank belong to that same procedure; they are not the result of a Player/Banker road pattern.
This rotation is another reason the word Banker can mislead an online Punto player. A house-banked stream can display one Banker hand all evening without customers taking over the casino’s financial role. A person dealing or revealing cards is also not necessarily the person funding the bank.
What should a UK reader check next?
- Is the exact game player-banked Chemin de fer or house-banked Punto Banco?
- Who offers the bank, how is opposing money accepted and what happens to an unmatched balance?
- Who represents the Player hand, and which draw decisions are optional?
- What is the complete Banker procedure, including when Player stands?
- What charge, rounding rule, tie rule and banking rotation apply?
- For any real-money GB service, does the current operator hold the appropriate permission for the exact service?
This comparison does not establish that Chemin is offered online in Great Britain. A foreign casino’s rules can explain a game without proving British availability or permission. Use our licence-checking guide for the service question, rather than treating a foreign rulebook as a recommendation.
Related questions
Is Chemin de fer the same as ordinary online baccarat?
Not necessarily. The consulted Chemin model is player-banked and gives the Player representative a choice on five. Ordinary house-banked Punto Banco uses fixed drawing rules. Read the complete title and rules.
Does betting on Banker make me the banker?
At house-banked Punto Banco, no. Banker is a hand label on which you place a wager. In Chemin, a participant actually offers a bank against accepted opposing stakes.
Can you choose whether to draw on five?
The cited MGC Chemin rules allow the Player representative to choose on an initial five. Metropolitan Punto Banco requires Player to draw on five unless an initial natural has stopped drawing.
Is Chemin de fer commission always 5%?
No universal rate is established by these sources. The cited MGC model permits 4% or 5% on banker winnings. Read the particular table’s rate, fee base and rounding provisions.
Does a tied Chemin hand always roll the stakes over?
The consulted MGC model voids tied main wagers. Do not assume compulsory rollover from a description of another Chemin rule family.
Where can I play Chemin de fer online in the UK?
No current GB online offering was verified for this guide. The foreign Chemin rules establish the described model, not UK access. A generic baccarat listing is insufficient evidence of player-banked Chemin.
