What do the deuces do?

A deuce is a two. The four twos in the deck act as wild cards in the described format, allowing qualifying combinations that ordinary five-card poker cannot make. Their value is determined by the wild-card rules, rather than treating them only as low natural cards.

A hand with a two can therefore be evaluated differently from the same-looking hand in Jacks or Better. You do not manually change the printed rank of a card to claim an extra prize: the game evaluates substitutions and the final qualifying category under its stated rules.

Do not assume every title containing ‘Deuces’ has the same schedule. Bonus Deuces Wild and other variants can introduce different awards. Read the full name and table before importing an explanation or decision chart.

What happens from deal to draw?

  1. Check the variant, qualifying hands, payout units, price per hand and number of hands.
  2. Receive five initial cards after the paid deal.
  3. Mark the cards you choose to hold, including any twos you select; the remaining cards are designated for replacement.
  4. Confirm the draw according to the actual interface. Evaluate the completed five-card hand, including permitted wild substitutions.
  5. Check the credited award against the relevant paytable row and subtract the full cost of the deal to calculate the net result.

This is the procedure, not an optimal-hold chart. Which cards give the best expected return depends on the exact game and schedule. Our general video poker guide explains Hold controls, replacement cards and the cost of playing multiple hands.

If a game copies held cards into several hands, each hand still needs its own final evaluation, and the total deal price includes every purchased hand. Several visible prizes do not by themselves establish an overall profit.

Natural royal, wild royal, five of a kind and four deuces

CategoryWhat distinguishes itCompleted-hand illustration
Natural royal flush10, J, Q, K, A of one suit without a wild substitutionA♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠
Wild royal flushA royal made using at least one wild twoA♠ 2♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠; two substitutes for K♠
Five of a kindFive matching ranks made possible by wild substitution9♠ 9♥ 9♦ 9♣ 2♠
Four deucesAll four twos, plus a fifth card2♠ 2♥ 2♦ 2♣ 7♠

These are distinct categories. A wild royal must not be credited as the higher natural-royal award merely because a two can stand in for the missing card. Four deuces also has its own listed treatment rather than being assumed to pay the same as any other four of a kind.

Use the highest applicable award under the cited rules, not the sum of every description that could fit. A hand containing wild cards can meet several descriptions, but that is not permission to add a royal, flush and straight award together.

Does a pair of jacks pay in Deuces Wild?

A high pair alone is not a paying category in the cited Deuces Wild schedules; the ordinary minimum is three of a kind. Two pair without a qualifying wild improvement is also below that threshold. This is an important change from Jacks or Better, where a high pair normally qualifies.

Example final cardsInterpretation in the described format
J♠ J♥ 8♦ 5♣ 3♠High pair only; not enough for the minimum category
J♠ J♥ 2♦ 5♣ 3♠The two can complete three jacks
8♠ 8♥ 5♦ 5♣ K♠Two pair alone; below the stated minimum
8♠ 8♥ 5♦ 5♣ 2♠The two can complete a full house

The last example explains why evaluating only the printed natural cards can miss the qualifying hand. It does not prescribe which cards to keep from an initial deal. Our Jacks or Better guide covers that game's different pair threshold and paytable terminology.

How do you read a Deuces Wild payout?

First establish whether the table lists credits, amounts in cash or multipliers of the total stake. Evolution's published First Person Video Poker document, identified as E2 14-11-2024 in its metadata, gives one Deuces Wild schedule. Selected total-return multipliers are shown below. They are an example, not a universal table or a claim that this configuration is available at a GB casino.

Selected category in that documentTotal-return multiplierAward on an invented 20p handNet result
Three of a kind1×£0.20£0.00
Straight2×£0.40£0.20 profit
Full house4×£0.80£0.60 profit
Wild royal25×£5.00£4.80 profit

In that same documented schedule, natural royal pays 800×, four deuces 200×, wild royal 25×, five of a kind 15× and straight flush 9×. Thus four deuces has a higher listed award than a five-of-a-kind interpretation made with those wild cards. Other schedules must be checked separately.

These four cells do not describe the full schedule or establish an RTP. Other rows and the decision assumptions are needed. A conventional coin-based game's royal row may also change non-linearly between coin columns, so do not apply a one-coin figure to a different setting without reading it.

Our guide to reading game rules explains how to resolve the unit and column before comparing a displayed award with the money debited. A similar-looking schedule from another variant is not sufficient evidence of a payout error.

Can you rely on suggested holds or an advertised RTP?

A suggested hold is an interface feature, not proof of optimal play. The cited First Person rules expressly warn that the default suggested strategy may not always be optimal. Read how the specific game chooses defaults and handles a missed decision deadline; do not assume every video poker suggestion has the same basis.

A theoretical percentage belongs to a particular schedule, procedure and set of decision assumptions. It does not guarantee that a hand will improve, that wild cards will arrive, or that a session will return that percentage of your money. Our RTP explanation covers the difference between an average over many wagers and a personal outcome.

For the same reason, a generic instruction such as ‘always hold this combination’ needs more evidence than the title Deuces Wild. This article explains the mechanics and hand categories; it does not present an unverified optimal strategy or promise a winning method.

How do you check an unexpected result?

  • Save the exact variant and full paytable, with any coin-column or feature conditions.
  • Record the initial cards, held cards, final cards and round reference.
  • Identify whether twos change the highest qualifying category, and whether the royal is natural or wild.
  • Convert the listed award using the correct cash unit and count every purchased hand.
  • Ask support for the rule and transaction calculation if the credited amount still differs.

Related questions

Are all twos wild in Deuces Wild?

In the conventional format described here, all four twos are wild. Named variants still need their own substitution and payout rules checked.

Is a royal made with a two a natural royal?

No. If a two substitutes for a missing royal card, it is a wild royal. Natural and wild royals have separate treatment in the cited rules.

Can you make five of a kind?

Yes. Wild substitution can complete five cards of one rank, such as four nines plus a two. Use the five-of-a-kind row in the actual paytable.

Does two pair pay in Deuces Wild?

Two pair alone is below the minimum in the cited standard schedules. A wild two may change the completed hand into a higher qualifying category, so evaluate the whole hand under the rules.

Is a £1 return from five 20p hands a profit?

No. The deal cost £1 in total, so a combined £1 return breaks even. Add all hand awards and subtract the full stake.

Can I use a Jacks or Better strategy chart?

Do not assume it transfers. Deuces Wild changes card behaviour, qualifying hands and payouts. A decision chart needs to match the exact variant and schedule.
