What are social casino games?

Social casino games imitate formats such as slots, roulette or blackjack while using virtual chips or credits. “Social” does not necessarily mean that every round involves other players; it is a product category, not a particular set of table rules.

A play-only service may let someone start without payment and sell additional credits or features later. It may also be funded through advertising. Free to download, free to start and free of optional purchases are different claims.

The Gambling Commission discussed these models in its March 2017 position paper, which remains linked from its current virtual-currency guidance. That paper is useful for explaining the distinction between more play and a valuable prize; its historical survey figures should not be read as current usage statistics.

Can you win real money at a social casino?

In a genuinely play-only model, the extra credits awarded by a game cannot be redeemed for cash or traded for valuable items. The fact that credits can be bought does not by itself mean winning them produces a cash prize. Buying entertainment can still cost real money, even when the resulting balance is virtual.

Fictional play-only exampleCredit balanceCash position
Pay £5 for 1,000 nonredeemable credits1,000 credits£5 spent
Use 200 credits on a round800 creditsNo additional cash payment in this example
Receive 500 credits from that round1,300 creditsStill £5 spent; no cash-redemption route

The net change on that round is +300 credits, but there is no established exchange rate back into pounds. It would be misleading to call the ending balance £6.50 or to describe it as £1.50 cash profit. A purchase price is not automatically a redemption promise.

Check the actual terms rather than a bank-balance graphic in an advert. In a 25 September 2024 ruling involving particular Gamehaus social casino apps, the ASA found ads misleading because they implied real-world earnings even though the products did not offer withdrawable money or tangible prizes. A free-to-play statement did not remove that impression.

What is a sweepstakes casino?

The term is often used for a casino-style product that combines play-only credits with a separate promotional prize mechanism. In one model, one currency is for entertainment and another can lead to prizes, subject to eligibility, identity and redemption conditions. Currency names vary, and not every service uses the same arrangement.

A checked US product’s own terms illustrate why the distinction matters: they separate purchased, non-prize-redeemable Gold Coins from a promotional currency with prize-redemption conditions. Those terms also restrict eligible locations to specified US territory. This is a foreign product example, not a GB participation route or a finding that its model complies with British law.

A short help page may describe all balances as virtual tokens while the detailed terms distinguish their functions. Read the prize and location conditions as well as the product’s headline description. No overseas eligibility should be inferred from a page being visible in a British browser.

Are social casinos gambling in Great Britain?

For the non-machine context discussed here, section 6 of the Gambling Act 2005 defines gaming around participating in a game of chance for a prize, with a prize meaning money or money’s worth. Skill can coexist with chance. The actual arrangement matters more than a marketing label.

The Commission’s virtual-currency guidance says items convertible into cash or tradeable for valuable items can amount to money or money’s worth. Its social-casino position paper also addresses game-related rewards redeemable for goods or services with monetary value. The question is therefore broader than whether a site has a button labelled cash withdrawal.

By contrast, the position paper says that winning additional play credits which can also be bought is not, by itself, enough to make the activity licensable. That distinction depends on the credits genuinely staying within the nonredeemable model; calling a valuable item a token does not settle the issue.

An operator offering licensable remote casino gambling to people in Great Britain needs the relevant Gambling Commission permission. A US registration, an overseas licence or a social-casino label does not replace it. This guide does not adjudicate the full legal status of a named platform.

Great Britain here means England, Scotland and Wales. Do not transfer this explanation unchanged to Northern Ireland or another country. Our GB legality and licence-check guides explain the jurisdiction and how to inspect an exact domain.

Does “no purchase necessary” make it legal?

Not by itself. Section 6 expressly treats acquiring a chance of a prize as relevant whether or not the person risks losing anything at the game. Free play is therefore not a universal exception for casino-style gaming.

Free draws have a different legal analysis. The Act’s Schedule 2 addresses payment for the lottery definition, and the Commission explains conditions under which a free draw or prize competition does not need its licence. A mixed free-and-paid draw needs a genuine free route that meets the relevant requirements.

Those draw provisions must not be copied over as a blanket approval for every casino-style sweepstakes product. Offering a postal option, describing a purchase as entertainment, or giving promotional tokens does not by itself resolve all questions about the game and its prizes.

How can you check a social or sweepstakes claim?

  1. Identify the exact website or app, the company behind it and the intended country. Similar branding can cover separate products.
  2. Find every balance or currency and read whether it can be bought, awarded, redeemed, transferred or exchanged for something valuable.
  3. Separate real spending from displayed credits. Check purchase, expiry and refund terms without treating a virtual win as cash income.
  4. Read the actual location restrictions. An accessible page or a foreign no-purchase claim does not establish GB eligibility.
  5. For a claim to offer licensed GB casino gambling, check the exact domain and relevant permissions in the Commission’s register.
  6. If a claim remains unclear or the terms contradict an advert, do not rely on the advert to resolve it. Preserve the evidence and use the appropriate complaint route.

This is a way to understand a claim, not a route around location checks or self-exclusion. A product outside a particular gambling scheme should not be used to bypass a decision to stop gambling. Independent support is available through the Support and safer gambling link below.

If your question is specifically about free demonstrations of a particular slot, the demo-versus-real-money guide covers that narrower issue. The fake-advert guide explains misleading casino identities and prize claims.

Related questions

What is a social casino?

It is a casino-style game service using virtual credits, often with optional purchases or advertising. In a play-only model, winning credits does not give a cash-redemption right. Its terms and actual arrangements determine whether it fits that play-only model.

What is the difference between a social casino and a sweepstakes casino?

Social casino is a broad label. A sweepstakes product may add a separate promotional currency or prize mechanism to play-only credits. The currencies, prizes and location restrictions must be read separately; the label alone does not establish GB legality.

If I buy virtual coins, are the winnings real money?

Not automatically. Bought credits may be nonredeemable entertainment credits. A higher credit balance only becomes a valuable prize if the actual terms and arrangements provide that function; a purchase price is not a promised cash-out rate.

Does no purchase necessary mean a sweepstakes casino is legal in Britain?

No blanket conclusion follows. The gaming definition can apply even without a risk of losing anything. Lottery free-draw provisions are a separate analysis, so a free route is not universal approval for casino-style gaming.

Does UKGC approval apply to free draws?

The Commission says it does not approve free draws or prize competitions. A compliant exempt draw does not need its licence, but that is not a casino licence or an endorsement of an individual product.

Is a free-to-play social casino risk-free?

No. Optional purchases can cost real money, and spending or time can still become a concern. Nonredeemable credits do not make a purchase affordable or guarantee that gambling-style play cannot cause difficulties. Seek independent support if it is affecting you.
