Is a five-card trick a standard blackjack rule?

No. Do not assume five non-busting cards win automatically merely because the game is called blackjack. Charlie describes an additional card-count condition in particular variants. The target count, dealer exceptions and price need the actual rules.

This page concerns casino 21. The British shedding game also called Black Jack or Switch belongs to another family. Pontoon is a related but separate casino game; a five-card trick there can have a different rank and payout.

TermWhat to establish
Five-card Charlie or five-card trickDoes this exact game recognise five cards, with which total and priority?
Six Card CharlieSix cards in the individual hand; five is not enough
Ordinary multi-card 21A point total, not automatically a Charlie or two-card natural
Separate Charlie betting selectionA separate contract may exist; do not infer main-hand rules or price from its name

The blackjack basics guide explains ordinary play. Keep that foundation separate from an extra automatic-win clause: the fact that a feature appears in one product does not change every table.

Do five or six cards need to total less than 21?

Read whether the threshold includes exactly 21. Evolution’s published Six Card Charlie definition says 21 or less, so exact 21 satisfies its points condition. A total above 21 does not. Count the whole hand, not only the cards drawn after the initial deal.

Invented cardsCount and totalWhat the example establishes
2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 2Five cards, 16Meets a five-card non-busting count, not a six-card count
2 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 4Six cards, 16Meets a six-card non-busting count
A + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6Six cards, 21 with ace as 1Exact 21 is not a bust
2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 10Five cards, 24Target count does not rescue a bust
2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 4 + 4Six cards, 22Also fails the non-busting condition
5 + 5 + 5 + 6Four cards, 21Not five cards and not a two-card natural

These illustrate recognition, not a recommended sequence of hits. A completed or stopped hand does not gain permission to draw again just because another card would reach the count. Starting with two cards means a five-card hand ordinarily contains three further cards and a six-card hand four further cards, if the rules allow the path.

With aces, recalculate the usable total rather than adding 11 permanently. The card-values guide explains soft and hard totals. Do not combine cards across split hands to reach a Charlie count.

Does Charlie beat a dealer blackjack?

There is no universal hierarchy to apply from the word Charlie alone. Current public examples consulted on 30 October 2026 show why product identity matters. None is a played-account test or proof that the reader can access that game.

Named published modelWhat its evidence establishesImportant boundary
Evolution Infinite Blackjack / Six Card Charlie descriptionSix cards totalling 21 or less win automatically even against dealer blackjack; split hands evaluated separatelyPublic supplier description, not every deployed build or complete timing/payout rules
Mecca Live ONE Blackjack descriptionSix non-busting player cards are described as an automatic winThat short page does not establish every natural-priority or payout detail
Betfair Exchange Blackjack helpFive cards under 22 outrank blackjack in the described logicAn exchange product, not a universal fixed-price casino hand
BGaming Pontoon rulesFive-card trick is below Pontoon; winning trick pays 2:1 and the dealer wins equal-ranked handsA separate supplier model; current GB availability not established

A page discussing five-card Charlie cannot establish a six-card rule, and an exchange selection cannot establish a flat casino payout. Likewise, a supplier catalogue or GB-facing description does not replace the precise help for a particular table.

Before comparing outcomes, establish whether the hand could still be in play. A rule that gives a completed Charlie priority does not imply permission to keep drawing after an earlier resolution. The hole-card guide explains why a dealer’s hidden card and the timing of a check are separate questions.

Why do early checks and split-hand rules matter?

A historical supplier-authored Infinite Blackjack factsheet, hosted by BetConstruct with 2021_03 in its filename, supplies a useful timing example. In that documented model, if the check finds dealer blackjack, an initial player total of 18 or more ends the hand, with a matching player blackjack pushing; lower initial totals can continue for the Charlie possibility. This is historical model evidence, not a claim about today’s GB implementation.

That exception illustrates why automatically beats dealer blackjack is not a complete description of how every starting hand reaches the result. A player must have an eligible hand that remains live and can receive the required cards. Do not transplant the historical timing into another game.

The current Evolution definition evaluates each split hand separately. Three cards in each of two hands do not create one six-card Charlie. Ask the exact game about split-ace restrictions, permitted draws and when a hand is completed; do not fill missing rules with assumptions from ordinary blackjack.

Keep the rule version and outcome together when discussing a dispute. The round identifier, actual card order and action history matter more than a generic screenshot showing the word Charlie. No extra stake is needed to preserve or ask about an existing result.

How much does a Charlie pay?

Use the exact paytable. The historical Infinite factsheet lists Charlie at 1:1 and a natural at 3:2. BGaming’s separate Pontoon model lists a winning five-card trick at 2:1. Those prices are not interchangeable and do not prove today’s GB paytable.

Winning fictional £10 stake at the stated priceProfitTotal returned, including stake
Charlie at 1:1 in the historical example£10£20
Natural at 3:2 in that documented example£15£25
Winning five-card trick at 2:1 in the separate Pontoon model£20£30

For example, £10 × 1 = £10 profit, plus the £10 stake gives £20 total. Calling £20 profit would count the stake twice. The natural-payout guide explains this return-versus-profit distinction in more detail.

A main-hand Charlie rule is not automatically a separately paid bonus bet. Evolution identifies its optional side bets separately, while Betfair’s Exchange help describes an additional exotic Charlie selection. Each wager needs its own stake, qualifying event and settlement; the name alone does not connect their prices. The side-bet guide explains separate wagers.

What should you check in the actual game rules?

  • Exact game title, supplier and available rule version.
  • Required number of cards and whether exactly 21 qualifies.
  • Dealer-blackjack priority and early resolution or stopping rules.
  • Eligibility and separate counting after a split.
  • Main-wager payout, distinct optional wagers and their stake costs.

If those details are absent from a short description, treat them as unestablished. This guide has not verified a current conventional GB five-card table or a universal Charlie price. It does not recommend a casino, a staking method or chasing another card.

There is also no universal Charlie frequency supplied here. A percentage measuring the change in house edge when a rule is added is not the probability of receiving that hand. Decks, permitted decisions and exact rules affect what is being measured.

Use the strategy guide to understand why a chart needs a stated rule model. A chart for ordinary blackjack or another Charlie model cannot simply be assumed correct for this one.

Related questions

Do five cards under 21 always win in blackjack?

No. A five-card automatic-win rule must exist in that exact game, with the applicable priority and eligibility conditions. Five non-busting cards do not satisfy a six-card rule.

Do the starting cards count towards Charlie?

The target concerns the cards in the individual hand, including its initial cards. On an ordinary unsplit two-card path, five cards contain three further cards and six contain four. The game must still allow that path.

Can Six Card Charlie total exactly 21?

Evolution’s published definition uses six cards totalling 21 or less, so exact 21 satisfies that points condition. A bust does not. Other game conditions and timing still apply.

Does Six Card Charlie beat dealer blackjack?

Evolution’s published Six Card Charlie definition says it does. Do not generalise that answer to every Charlie or assume every resolved starting hand can continue drawing. Check the exact current rules.

Is a five-card trick the same as Pontoon?

No. In the cited BGaming Pontoon model, Pontoon and the five-card trick are different ranked categories, with Pontoon higher. Its model and payout cannot be applied universally to blackjack.

Is Charlie always a separate side bet?

No. A rule can settle the main hand, while a separately named exchange or side selection is another wager. Check which contract, stake and paytable are being described.
