Which cards count for Perfect Pairs?

Use the first two cards in the player hand carrying the accepted side bet. The dealer’s upcard is not part of this wager. In Grosvenor’s published Blackjack: Perfect Pairs and 21+3 rules, the side bet settles after the opening deal, before the main hand continues.

The named rules require a main wager on the corresponding blackjack hand. The optional side wager must be accepted before Deal; you cannot add it after seeing a pair. Check both stakes before committing the round.

A pair means matching ranks: two nines, two queens or two aces, for example. A jack and a queen are both worth ten in blackjack, but they are different ranks. A hit card received later cannot turn an unsuccessful opening combination into a Perfect Pairs win.

The blackjack basics explain the main hand. This page concentrates on the additional wager, including the cost that sits beside your main stake.

What are mixed, coloured and perfect pairs?

CategoryOpening-card exampleWhat matches
Mixed / red-black pair9♥ and 9♣Rank; the suits have different colours
Coloured pair9♥ and 9♦Rank and colour; the suits differ
Perfect pair9♥ and another 9♥Rank and suit
No pair9♥ and 8♥Same suit alone does not qualify

Hearts and diamonds are red; clubs and spades are black. The coloured category here excludes the identical-suit perfect category. Treat the three rows as distinct pair classes rather than adding their awards together.

Two copies of the same card are possible in a multi-deck game. One standard deck contains only one nine of hearts, so it cannot produce the illustrated perfect pair. Identical cards in a six-deck game are not, by themselves, evidence of a dealing error.

How much does Perfect Pairs pay?

These are two named public GB-operator rule examples read on 30 October 2026. Both describe six decks. Their public help does not establish the latest account build or today’s table availability; the first page also contains legacy interface references. Match your selected game’s complete table.

Qualifying pairGrosvenor: Perfect Pairs and 21+3Grosvenor: All Bets Blackjack RNG
Perfect30:1 profit odds25:1 profit odds
Coloured10:112:1
Mixed / red-black5:16:1

Profit odds of 25:1 mean £25 profit on a qualifying £1 bet, plus the £1 winning stake returned: £26 credited. They do not mean £25 including the stake. The All Bets explanation makes that convention explicit; Felt’s separately scoped Québec rules also show the stake being returned.

Do not take the 30:1 top award from one table and the 12:1 or 6:1 lower awards from the other. That would describe a third table that neither cited page supplies. A progressive product also needs its own jackpot and qualification rules.

How do the side bet and main hand affect the cash result?

Assume an accepted £10 main bet and £2 Perfect Pairs bet: £12 committed. Use the 30/10/5 table, no split, double, insurance, fee or other award. These amounts are invented examples, not table limits.

Constructed resultMain returnedSide returnedTotal returned minus £12
9♥ + 9♦; main 18 loses to dealer 20£0£22: £20 profit + £2 stake£10 profit
Same coloured pair; main 18 pushes dealer 18£10£22£20 profit
9♥ + 8♦; main 17 pushes dealer 17£10£0£2 loss
No pair; main hand and side bet both lose£0£0£12 loss

A main-hand push returns only the main stake in the third row; it does not refund the failed side bet. Conversely, a winning side bet does not turn the main blackjack hand into a win. Add all returned money, then subtract every accepted stake once.

A later paid split or double would change the £12 outlay assumed here. It does not replace the opening cards used for the already determined pair result. Keep the opening side-bet award and the subsequent hand stakes in separate entries.

What are the odds of a Perfect Pairs win?

The following is our calculation for a fresh, complete six-deck shoe: 312 standard cards, no jokers, equally likely dealing without replacement and no known card removals. After your first card, 311 remain. Five are identical copies, six have the same rank in the other same-colour suit, and twelve have that rank in the opposite-colour suits.

EventMatching second cards / remaining cardsProbability per opening pair
Perfect pair5 / 311About 1.61%; roughly 1 in 62.2
Coloured pair6 / 311About 1.93%
Mixed pair12 / 311About 3.86%
Any paying pair23 / 311About 7.40%
No paying pair288 / 311About 92.60%

The 1.61% figure is for the exact same rank and suit, not for any side-bet win. A chance of roughly 1 in 62.2 does not schedule one perfect pair every 62 hands. The fresh-shoe calculation also cannot be transferred unchanged to a live shoe after observed cards have been removed.

How do the paytable and deck count change expected return?

Include the winning stake when calculating return. At 30/10/5, a £1 winning side bet returns £31, £11 or £6. Weight those returns by the six-deck probabilities: (31 × 5 + 11 × 6 + 6 × 12) / 311 = 293/311, or about 94.21% returned on average in this model. The corresponding expected loss is 18/311, about 5.79% of side-bet turnover.

Fresh-shoe model30/10/5 expected loss25/12/6 expected loss
Six decks18/311 ≈ 5.79%19/311 ≈ 6.11%
Eight decks; comparison only14/415 ≈ 3.37%17/415 ≈ 4.10%

The eight-deck row is a mathematical comparison, not a claim that either cited Grosvenor game uses eight decks. For D decks, the three counts after the first card are D−1, D and 2D, from 52D−1 remaining cards. Changing D changes the chance of each category.

These are independently recalculated side-bet figures under the stated assumptions, not a combined blackjack RTP, certification or prediction of your next session. £100 of turnover could be the same money wagered repeatedly; it is not necessarily a £100 deposit. The house-edge guide explains that distinction.

Is Perfect Pairs the same as 21+3 or insurance?

Perfect PairsYour first two cardsDo their ranks and suits form a qualifying pair?
21+3Your first two plus dealer upcardDo they form a qualifying three-card poker combination?
InsuranceDealer blackjackDoes the dealer have a two-card blackjack?

The dealer’s card can affect a 21+3 result without changing Perfect Pairs. A strong total in ordinary blackjack is also not a pair category. Read the 21+3 and insurance guides for their own qualification and stake rules.

What should you check in the selected game?

  • Exact title and whether the wager is ordinary Perfect Pairs or a progressive variant.
  • Deck count, the complete three-category paytable and the meaning of profit odds.
  • Accepted main and side stakes, side-bet limits and any other wager on the layout.
  • The recorded opening cards, the correct hand and the applicable interruption or void terms.

If a result appears wrong, preserve the round identifier, accepted stakes, opening cards and the relevant help text. A page about another implementation cannot settle your account’s dispute. The complaint guide explains how to organise a disputed amount without making further bets.

Related questions

Can I win Perfect Pairs and lose the blackjack hand?

Yes. Perfect Pairs uses your opening pair; the main hand settles under its blackjack rules. Calculate the complete result from both returned amounts and both stakes. A side-bet win alone does not establish whether the whole round made a profit.

Does Perfect Pairs use the dealer’s card?

The ordinary versions described here use only the player’s first two cards. The dealer upcard is used by a different wager, 21+3.

Do a jack and a queen count as a perfect pair?

No. They share a blackjack point value of ten but have different ranks. A perfect pair matches rank and suit, such as two queens of hearts from different decks.

Does a main-hand push return the Perfect Pairs stake?

A main-hand push does not itself refund a losing Perfect Pairs wager. Its separate opening-card result and any applicable void rule determine that side stake.

What does a £1 perfect pair pay?

In the cited 30:1 model it means £30 profit plus the £1 stake, £31 returned. In the cited 25:1 model it means £25 profit plus £1, £26 returned. Check which complete paytable applies.

Can blackjack basic strategy improve an opening Perfect Pairs result?

Hit, stand, split and double decisions occur after the opening cards used by this bet are known. They cannot change that already dealt pair. Main-hand strategy and side-bet expected return are separate calculations.
